Hello, Sunshine!
Even the blind could see that the world is full of contention and despair. The News and Media fan the sparks and the wildfire spreads all over Internetland. Like moths to a flame, people consume it, and the drama then overflows into everyday life. As we know, the Spirit cannot be present in darkness, and nothing chases the light of Christ away faster than contention and evil spirits.
It’s no wonder we’ve been asked to be a LIGHT unto the world. A beacon of hope. A glowing example of charity and grace. An ensign unto the nations.
When I first received my new calling as the social media specialist for my stake, it felt daunting. The techniques, timeframes, topics, are mostly up to me and the spirit. Needless to say, I fasted and prayed for guidance and direction.
Once inspiration hit me, it came clear and concise: I need to recognize ordinary people using their God-given gifts and talents to share the light of Christ with the community.
There are countless incredible people going about doing good. Often, though, their efforts go unnoticed because the loud and obnoxious drama and negativity seekers demand the spotlight. I knew there had to be a way to turn that around. To fill our city’s social media with positivity.
My friend/neighbor’s son, whom I’ll call Tom, is a prime example. When one of his teammates needed immediate life-saving surgery, he and four of the other players got together with their moms to help raise money. They put together a Lemonade, Hot Dogs, and Haircuts stand and ended up raising over $2,000. Yes, those of us that have been stuck with major medical bills know that it’s just a drop in the bucket. But the fact that these 7-year-olds and their moms so selflessly and enthusiastically sacrificed their time, talents, and means to serve their friend, speaks volumes of their character.
It’s ordinary people like that, sharing the Light of Christ in extraordinary ways, that deserve to be recognized. These young, upstanding citizens, decided to remain anonymous when it came to receiving their award, which in and of itself it commendable.
The Sunshine Award gives winner’s a shoutout on social media, a special magnet, and a certificate.
PS. Sorry for the blurry picture. Mobile mama office limitations. . .
